The work belongs to a series of silk-screen prints on fabric produced by Gemini G.E.L. of Los Angeles in 1974 and entitled Hoarfrost. Sand, like the rest of the series, consists of the overlapping of layers of filmy fabric with printed images, inspired by the ink that the artist noticed remained on the pieces of cheesecloth used to clean printing plates.
