Contrary to what is usually thought, it was objects and not people which were the first elements to be enlarged in Fernando Botero’s works. Dilation was applied for the first time in 1956 to a mandolin. Botero was struck by the form he had created, because it suggested something sensual to him. From then on he began to treat human figures too in a dilated way, without however ceasing to paint still lifes.

This still life, which is particularly effective for the solar splendor of its colors, is an excellent example of this genre.
