Stanley Whitney against the American judicial system: “No to Prision Life”

On 17 July, on the occasion of the International Day of Justice, the Lisson Gallery will present an online exhibition starring a series of unpublished works on paper by Stanley Whitney. The statement No to Prison Life – title of the exhibition – is the artist’s protest against the American judicial system of arrest, imprisonment and other forms of detention, which intends to denounce in particular the disproportion between the number of African Americans in relation to the total number of prisoners in US prisons.

The exhibition, in collaboration with the ‘ Art for Justice Fund, an organization founded by Agnes Gund to promote a reform of criminal justice, will present works never exhibited before, most of which were made by Whitney during the quarantine in New York.

Each work was created as a protest against the mass imprisonment in the United States, which disproportionately affects African-Americans, and 10% of sales revenue will go to Art for Justice Fund.
