The international art market turns its gaze towards the well-known (and expensive!)

It is known, to relaunch the market, top lots are needed, works by famous artists capable of flying at high prices. This is how the major auction houses are about to put some absolute masterpieces on the market. In the catalog of the auction scheduled by Sotheby’s on June 29, which ranges from impressionist and modern art to contemporary and African art, there is a work by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Head, work on paper from 1982, estimated around 9 / 12 million dollars. Among other masterpieces there is also a triptych by Francis Bacon inspired by Aeschylus’ Orestea worth over 60 million dollars, a work by Clyfford Still, estimated at around 25-35 million and a Roy Lichtenstein worth 20-30 million.

But if Sotheby’s unfolds its jewels, Christie’s is no different: a series of top lots will go up for auction on 10 July, with a worldwide event called “One”. Les Femmes D’Alger ‘F’ version of Picasso certainly stands out among the canvases, part of the series that also includes the work sold in 2015 to almost 180 million (Les Femmes D’Alger ‘0’ version).

Nobody can say whether the strategies put in place can lead to a real relaunch of the market. Certainly all this generates curiosity and desire to be present at auctions that give the perception of remaining memorable.
